Our philosophy

What were the grounds for "Hospice-Ukraine" fund creation?

We live without thoughts of death. We can't believe that in some time we'll have to leave this world. So we do anything possible to ignore this side of our existence. But at certain stage of his life the human may face the circumstances, which force him to think of finiteness of his being and change the entire world view for the rest of life! That is what happened to me.

That is the way things go. You live and your life is stable, you know for sure what you want to achieve and what steps to make. I do not like sudden changes, I'm not the adventurer and even unexpected circumstances could hardly provoke serious changes in my life.

I was addressed by the American Vale Hospice International fund president Elizaveta Petrovne Glinka. She asked to help organize a ward ford children at hospice department. Without any problems I found among my friends those who were ready to help financially and in other ways.

We have purchased furniture, an air conditioner and other interior items. Within few days I prepared a room sketch. On weekend with my friend I assembled the furniture. In a couple of days installed the air conditioner. The finishing strokes: laid carpet on the floor, placed HiFi system in the corner, hanged pictures on the walls. The room is ready. Convenient, resembling the home setting, with a special bed for the sick child and all necessary items for parents nursing him. At that stage nothing worried me so far. Everything was done properly. Elizaveta Petrovna said that will soothe suffering of the dying child and may help his family not only stay beside him but also receive psychological support on the side of Hospice staff. In some days following the opening of the ward for children at the Hospice department of Kiev city oncological hospital in Verhovinnaya str, 69, the first patient arrived. That was a boy aged 13, the son of the orthodox priest. I can not inform his precise diagnosis, I can only remember that was CANCER and he had only some days left to live. I spent his last days with Igor and his family.

I do not want to share my feelings that followed these words, since they are understandable to any human. I can only mention that having lived 30 years I vas unaware that children could suffer from cancer. I attended to the idea that cancer is a lot of elderly people. Meeting with Igor astonished me, brought changes into my soul and life. I was eager to do something good for children suffering from cancer, since at times there is no one at their side to somehow support them at the last moment of living. That was the reason for creating the fund, which will help the Ukrainians to join our efforts, knowledge, skills and resources to help people suffering from cancer. The fund functions on legal basis for half a year. We may observe the first steps on the way to the aim fixed by its team. Now most of my time I dedicate to the fund. My life got quite a clear sense: I want to stay beside people who suffer. It is hard to believe that children may suffer from cancer. You can not imagine the state of the parents who were informed that their child has cancer. You can't hold pain to see the condition of medical institutions where kids suffering from cancer get their treatment. You may hardly believe that Ukraine does not have any special programs for rehabilitation of children who chanced to recover from this terrible disease. They suffered acute pain undergoing courses of chemotherapy and radiation exposure. All that left dip scars on their developing psyche. Wee are beside those who suffer. We use nay means and methods acceptable within current legislation. We invite every of you to join us.

One of major "Hospice Ukraine" fund activities is rehabilitation of children who underwent a tormenting course of chemotherapy and radiation exposure. The disease steals their happy childhood - joy, tricks, plays and our duty is to return all that to them.

Our fund plans creation of the first Ukrainian rehabilitation fitness center on free of charge basis in one of Ukrainian resort areas. Living in such a center will help to support exhausted child's organism, fill its life with joy.

Creation of the first Ukrainian free centralized service center for onchological patients of the fourth clinical group - this may be the most large scale fund program.

The major idea of "Hospice Ukraine" fund implies that onchological patients with the fourth clinical group will receive care at home from patronage service employees. The projects is aimed at covering with care almost 100 % of all people suffering from incurable cancer and in need of care.

The service center comprises: coordination center, dispatch office, foods storage, kitchen, laundry, humanitarian aid items storage.

Cooked food and clean clothes will be delivered by a patronage service crew. The patronage crew will feed the patient, clean his apartment, and take away dirty clothes and linen. Single patients they will get assistance when taking a bath, have hair cut, pay a visit on them to check their state control that all potentially hazardous household utensils be switched off.

Such care will free the dying person from thought of household hardships, lavish care and love upon him to relieve his spiritual torments at that disease stage. Our task is providing the opportunity for thee sick person to make spiritual arrangements for death, which as well a birth is a mystery.

In the long term we plan creation and implementation along with governmental support of social programs, covering all socially handicapped persons - the poor, pensioners, invalids.

Every human is a personality and the entity, regardless of incomes or social position the person has the right to have a good life. We believe that the Ukrainians are ready for compassion and help people who suffer. We say to ourselves that we can not only take but also give. There are millions of us, Ukraine is our country, the pain of its citizens is our pain.

We are with those who suffer.
